Huchuy Qosqo (‘little Cusco’) is an Inca archeological site located in the Sacred Valley. The Huchuy Qosqo Trek provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the Sacred Valley, view the amazing flora and fauna, and learn more about the administrative and military center of Huchuy Qosqo. We have two itineraries you can choose from to get to Huchuy Qosqo
Option 1 – Leaving from Taucca, Chinchero.
You will be picked up from your hotel early in the morning and escorted to the starting point of the tour – Piuray Lagoon at Taucca, a short distance outside Chinchero. Be prepared for the high altitude as the starting point of the trek stands at 3,750 meters above sea level.
The early morning start will allow you to appreciate the spectacular view of the snow-capped Veronica, the highest peak in the Cordillera Urubamba range and the neighboring Vilcabamba range. The hike to Huchuy Qosqo will take approximately 6 hours. You will reach the highest point (4,400 meters above sea level) at Pucaqasa, after which you will descend to Pumamarca and Pucamarca to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, fields, and lakes.
You will continue your way to the canyon to follow the recently restored Inca trail, crossing streams and bridges, through Puma Punku and other Inca ruins and enter the citadel at 3,600 meters. The site itself sits atop a mountain, framed majestically by Lamay and Calca. Originally a palace, the adobe stone structures remain impressive even in the modern age.
After a brief rest in the shade of the Queñua (Andean oak) trees, you will enjoy your lunch before exploring the site at your leisure. You will then continue the trek zigzagging downhill through the fields for approximately 2 hours to Lamay where you will board your transport to either Cusco or Ollantaytambo/Machu Picchu.
Option 2 – Leaving from Patabamba.
After being picked up from you hotel, we will drive you until Pisac and then to the small community of Qorao and later Patabamba. The trek starts from Patabamba at 4,100 meters and you will enjoy the stunning landscape of the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Pisac, Lamay and Calca).
During the trek you will pass though the village of Siwas and visit Pucamarca and Pumamarca ruins. Then, you will enter the canyon and go through Puma Punku along the Inca trail until you reach Huchuy Qosqo. Following a welcome rest under the Queñua tree, you will continue down to Lamay to catch transfer to either Cusco or Ollantaytambo.
The Huchuy Qosqo trek, while considered an easy hike, does reach dizzying heights at over 4,000 meters. Giving you the opportunity to explore Peru off the beaten track, the Huchuy Qosqo trek is one we recommend if you can fit it into your itinerary.
