Lauca National Park
Located 160 km northeast of Arica, the Lauca National Park covers 1,380 km2 of the Altiplano and is full of stunning landscapes, snow-capped volcanoes, lakes, and hot springs. Lake Chungará is one of the main attractions; besides being one of the highest in the world, the Parinacota volcano and the Pomerape volcano surround it.
This national park protects a variety of South American camelids, such as the vicuña, and about 150 species of birds, such as the condor and the South American rhea. In 1981, the Lauca National Park was named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
