Choosing when to go to Peru is one of the most important decisions of the whole trip. The country spans desert coastline, the Andes and the Amazon: that's why there's no single perfect month for everything.
The dry season, from May to September, offers the best conditions for trekking and visiting the ruins, with clear skies but cold nights at altitude. June and July are the busiest months: booking the Inca Trail well in advance is essential, given the limited number of daily permits.
The rainforest can be visited year-round, but the dry season (May-October) makes hiking excursions easier, while the rainy season (November-April) raises river levels, making boat travel easier and rewarding you with lusher vegetation.
Lima, Paracas and Nazca have a mild desert climate all year round. Between December and April the days are warmer and sunnier, ideal for combining beach and culture; from June to September the coast is often covered by a grey mist, the "garúa".
For a first trip to Peru, the most balanced months are often April, May, September and October: you avoid the peak summer crowds while keeping favorable weather to combine the Andes, the coast and the Amazon in a single itinerary.
For a first trip, we recommend at least 10 days, enough to visit Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. With 15 days you can add Lake Titicaca and Arequipa, while with 18-20 days or more you can also explore the Amazon, Nazca and the southern coast. In general, it's best to spend more time in fewer destinations.
The dry season, from May to September, is generally the most recommended for Cusco, the Inca Trail and the Andes, while the coast is best enjoyed between December and April. The Amazon can be visited year-round, with different characteristics depending on the season.
