The places we will visit today are some of the most appreciated and highly rated by visitors:
Tintoreras is located less than five minutes from the city, where there is a small islet called Las Tintoreras. Due to volcanic activity, cracks have formed where the famous Galápagos sharks take refuge to rest, and they can be easily seen from a distance. As we walk along the trail, we can observe different types of lava, marine iguanas, birds such as the famous blue-footed booby, sea lions, sea turtles, a variety of fish, and occasionally rays and giant mantas.
Arnaldo Tupiza Breeding Center, where we will observe two of the five subspecies of giant tortoises under the care of park rangers. The center was created to protect individuals during their early years of life, as introduced animals such as pigs and donkeys pose a danger: the former eat their eggs, and the latter compete for food. The park rangers collect the eggs at the Growth Center, where they are incubated. After five years, when they reach a sufficient size to survive in their natural environment, they are reintroduced. Before departure, we will visit the Flamingo Lagoon.
Return to Santa Cruz Island in the late afternoon.
