San Agustín
San Agustín is the commercial and religious center that brought together two indigenous cultures that lived in the valleys of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers. Local sculptors transformed the volcanic stones thrown by the area’s volcanoes into impressive statues. As a result, there are more than 500 ancient life-size statues in the form of anthropomorphic figures and sacred animals, such as the jaguar, the frog, and the eagle, scattered around the town and its surroundings.
2.5 km west of San Agustín is the Archaeological Park, a total of 78 hectares where 130 statues are located. Inside the park are the Archaeological Museum and other archaeological sites: the Alto de los Ídolos, the Alto de las Piedras, La Chaquira, the Purutal, etc.
San Agustín is also a city with beautiful landscapes; you can admire its two impressive waterfalls: the Salto de Bordones and the Salto de Mortiño. It is also possible to go rafting on the Magdalena River.
