Santa Marta
Rodrigo de Bastidas founded the city in 1525 at the foot of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to obtain the gold of the indigenous Tayrona. Towards the end of the 16th century, the Tayronas were annihilated, and all the gold was taken to Spain. The liberator, Simón BolÃvar, died here in 1830. Its climate is hot but drier than in Cartagena, with an average temperature of 27 °C.
In Santa Marta, visit the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, where Simón BolÃvar spent his last days; here, you can appreciate the Altar of the Homeland and the Bolivarian Museum. It is also recommended to visit the Gold Museum, where ceramics and jewels of the Tayrona are displayed.
