Colombian Amazon

Leticia, Colombia’s gateway to the rainforest – where three countries meet along the Amazon River.

Leticia, the gateway to the Colombian Amazon

At the far south of Colombia, wedged between Peru and Brazil, lies Leticia, capital of the Colombian Amazon department and the country’s main gateway to the rainforest. Reachable only by plane or by river, Leticia sits right on the banks of the Amazon River, at the tripoint where the borders of Colombia, Peru and Brazil meet.

Amacayacu National Park

A short way upriver from Leticia lies Amacayacu National Natural Park, which protects a stretch of primary Amazon rainforest rich in biodiversity: monkeys, tropical birds, caimans and, with a bit of luck, the famous pink dolphins (boto), which swim in the waters of the surrounding rivers and lagoons.

The Ticuna indigenous communities

The region is home to several indigenous communities, among them the Ticuna, one of the most numerous Amazonian peoples in the border area. Visiting their villages offers a chance to discover traditional craftsmanship, ethnobotanical knowledge and a way of life deeply tied to the rhythm of the forest and the rivers.

Isla de los Micos and Puerto Nariño

Among the most popular excursions are a visit to Isla de los Micos, home to free-roaming monkeys, and a trip to Puerto Nariño, a small car-free ecological village overlooking a lake teeming with aquatic wildlife.

If you’re considering a trip to Colombia, the Amazon is the ideal stop for those seeking authenticity and untouched nature!
