One of South America's most famous indigenous markets – crafts, living traditions and volcanic lagoons a stone's throw from Quito.
Otavalo, about two hours from Quito, hosts one of the most famous and oldest indigenous markets in South America. Every Saturday, Plaza de Ponchos fills with stalls of textiles, rugs, silver jewellery and crafts produced by the local Kichwa Otavaleño community.
The Otavaleño people are known worldwide for their skill in weaving, an art passed down through generations that continues to drive the region's economy and culture.
Near Otavalo, Cuicocha Lagoon fills a volcanic crater with two small islets at the centre of its turquoise waters: a scenic trail follows its rim, offering spectacular views of the Cotacachi volcano.
The region also holds San Pablo Lagoon, at the foot of the Imbabura volcano, and small villages specialising in particular crafts, such as leatherwork in Cotacachi.
For those seeking authentic craftsmanship and volcanic landscapes, Otavalo and its lagoons are an unmissable stop in Ecuador!
