Lakes and alpine atmosphere in Patagonia – a city reminiscent of the Swiss Alps at the foot of the Andes.
San Carlos de Bariloche, commonly known simply as Bariloche, sits on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, at the heart of the national park of the same name, the oldest in Argentina. Founded by German and Swiss immigrants in the late 19th century, the city retains an alpine-style architecture that has earned it the nickname “Switzerland of Patagonia.”
The famous Circuito Chico is a scenic route of around 60 km that winds through lakes, woods and lookout points, taking in iconic spots such as Cerro Campanario, from which you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views in Patagonia over a mosaic of lakes and mountains.
Thanks to the legacy of European settlers, Bariloche has become Argentina's artisan chocolate capital: the shop windows downtown display elaborate creations, and every Easter the city celebrates this tradition with a dedicated festival.
In winter, Cerro Catedral, just a few kilometres from the centre, becomes one of the largest and most renowned ski resorts in South America, while in summer it offers scenic trekking trails and outdoor activities for the whole family.
If you're considering a trip to Argentina, Bariloche is the perfect stop to combine nature, sport and alpine atmosphere!
