Argentina's wine capital – high-altitude vineyards at the foot of the Andes.
Mendoza lies at the foot of the Andes, in a desert region turned into one of the most important wine-producing areas in the world thanks to an ingenious irrigation canal system inherited from the ancient Huarpes people. Today Mendoza produces about two-thirds of Argentina's wine and is famous above all for its signature grape, Malbec.
The areas of Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco are home to dozens of historic and contemporary bodegas, many of which offer guided tours, tastings and gourmet restaurants set among the vine rows, with the snow-capped Andes as a stunning backdrop.
A short distance from Mendoza rises Aconcagua, at 6,961 metres the highest peak in the Americas and in the southern hemisphere, a coveted destination for mountaineers from all over the world. Aconcagua Provincial Park also offers scenic trails accessible to those who aren't experienced climbers.
Every year in March, Mendoza celebrates the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia, the grape harvest festival, with parades, shows and the election of the harvest queen: one of the most cherished popular events in all of Argentina.
If you're considering a trip to Argentina, Mendoza is the ideal stop for lovers of good wine and Andean scenery!
