Tayrona and Sierra Nevada

Where the jungle meets the Caribbean Sea – wild beaches at the foot of the highest coastal mountain range in the world.

Tayrona National Natural Park

On the Colombian Caribbean coast, not far from Santa Marta, lies the Tayrona National Natural Park, a protected area where the tropical forest reaches down to white sand beaches and turquoise waters dotted with enormous granite boulders. Cabo San Juan cove, with its famous hammock suspended between the rocks, is one of the most iconic images of Colombia.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

The park lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain range in the world: its snow-capped peaks, which rise above 5,700 meters, are barely forty kilometers from the sea, a unique geographic contrast on the planet.

Tayrona and Sierra Nevada

The mountain’s ancestral guardians

The Sierra Nevada is home to indigenous peoples such as the Kogi, the Arhuaco, the Wiwa and the Kankuamo, descendants of the ancient Tayrona, who consider this mountain the “heart of the world” and jealously guard its spiritual and ecological balance.

Ciudad Perdida

In the heart of the sierra lies hidden Ciudad Perdida (Lost City), a complex of stone terraces built by the Tayrona centuries before Machu Picchu, reachable only via a multi-day trek through the tropical forest, amid rivers, climbs and encounters with the local indigenous communities.

If you’re considering a trip to Colombia, Tayrona and Sierra Nevada offer the perfect meeting of sea and mountains!
