Cloud forest and a birdwatching paradise – an hour and a half from Quito, another green and humid world.
Mindo is a small village nestled in the cloud forest on the western slopes of the Andes, about two hours by road from Quito. Its humid microclimate and lush vegetation make it one of Ecuador's most important biodiversity hotspots, declared a protected area and internationally recognised by the birdwatching community.
Mindo is home to over 500 bird species, including dozens of hummingbird species that can be observed up close in the many gardens fitted with feeders. The famous toucan barbet and countless colourful tanagers make Mindo a must-visit for ornithology enthusiasts from around the world.
The region is also one of the main growing areas for Ecuadorian cacao: many local farms offer "bean-to-bar" tours to discover the entire chocolate-making process. Butterfly farms (mariposarios) let you observe up close the life cycle of dozens of species, while zip-lines and hanging bridges offer spectacular views over the forest from above.
A hike among the area's many waterfalls, with the option of tubing along the rivers or simply cooling off beneath the falls, completes the Mindo experience, ideal for a one- or two-day trip from Quito.
If you're considering a trip to Ecuador, Mindo is the perfect destination for nature and birdwatching lovers!
