Day 1. Downhill to Llahuar
Colca Canyon downhill
At dawn you leave Arequipa and drive to Chivay where you first have a hearty breakfast. You then travel to some small Andean villages – Yanque, Maca and Pinchollo – for short visits and to admire the local colonial churches. Later you will stop at the Cruz del Condor to spot the majestic king of the Peruvian Andes – although there will be another opportunity later in the trek. Once arrived in Cabanaconde you will collect provisions before heading to Llahuar. Initially it is a gentle trek with spectacular views, and finally the real trek begins! The downhill route is a 7 Km challenge with sharp steep bends and stunning views. Here nature is untouched and the environment can be dry or greenish depending of the season. After this glorious descent you shall come across some geysers and finally after a gentle climb you start going back down to the Llahuar Bridge, where the River Huaruro flows into the River Colca. Once at the Lodge, lunch will be served. In the afternoon, you can take advantage of the natural hot springs or attempt some trout fishing. Dinner and overnight stay will be in basic accommodation.
Day 2. Mirador La Apacheta – Sangalle Oasis
Mirador La Apacheta
After breakfast, you will set off for Sangalle. Today it is mainly uphill and it is by far the less challenging day with nature at its best! First stop will be the small village of Paclla, continue to the breath-takings Mirador of La Apacheta then climb up to the Mirador of Achachihua and finally down to the small village of Malata. Here you will have a snack and briefly visit the local church. You will then continue downhill to the Oasis of Sangalle where the natural pools will sooth your ankles and muscles. Now it is time to relax in your rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Lunch and dinner will be served at your convenience and if you still have some energy left our guide will show you around the Oasis to admire the local flora. Overnight stay in cabañas in Sangalle, accommodation with private bathrooms.
Day 3. Hike to Cabanaconde
End of the Tour
Wake up call at dawn to avoid the scorching sun and begin what is likely to be the most difficult hike through the Colca Canyon. This is a dramatic 5 Km hike that in the space of two to three hours will take you from 2,100 to 3,200 meters above sea level. On the way up, our guide will first help you find the rhythm and then each person, according to the individual pace, will reach the summit at leisure. This enterprise is more than rewarded by the scenic views and once at the top you won’t believe you have made it!! This is quite an accomplishment that will always be imprinted in your heart!
Later, you will head up to Cabanaconde crossing corn fields where foxes and a variety of birds can be seen. Breakfast is served in Cananaconde and lunch in Chivay before returning to Arequipa or to Puno if you prefer (just let us know).
