The Best Time for a First Trip to Ecuador

Ecuador can be visited all year round, but climate and rainfall vary between the Andes, the Amazon, the coast and the Galápagos. In the Sierra, June–September tends to be drier; in the Galápagos, January–May is warmer, while June–December is cooler and drier.

If you plan to visit both the Andes and the Galápagos on the same trip, it's best to schedule during the shoulder seasons. The Avenue of the Volcanoes and Cotopaxi can also be visited in winter, but you need to be ready for colder temperatures at night.

When to Go to Ecuador's Main Areas

Each area has its own dynamics: seasonality, climate, logistics and service availability change a lot from north to south.

Avenue of the Volcanoes and Cotopaxi

Can be visited all year round, but the climate needs attention: warm days and cold nights. The pace should be built progressively to avoid fatigue on excursions.

Ecuadorian Amazon

At its best between October and March. December, January and February are the most sought-after months for trekking, lodges and boat trips; March is often especially popular for its balance between climate and lower visitor numbers.

FAQ on When to Go to Ecuador

Ecuador can be visited all year round, but climate and rainfall vary between the Andes, the Amazon, the coast and the Galápagos. In the Sierra, June–September tends to be drier; in the Galápagos, January–May is warmer, while June–December is cooler and drier. Not necessarily. High season often offers favorable conditions in the most sought-after areas, but requires booking further in advance and can have higher prices, especially in the Galápagos, where cruise ship availability is limited.

No. Altitude, latitude, coast and forest create very different conditions during the same time of year: choose the best month for your trip to Ecuador based on the regions included in the itinerary, checking the specific forecast for each area.
