The Incas' sacred island on Lake Titicaca – scenic trails, local communities and pre-Columbian ruins.
According to Inca mythology, Isla del Sol is the place where the Sun and the first Incas, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, were born. Situated on Lake Titicaca, a short boat ride from Copacabana, it is considered the most sacred site on the entire Andean altiplano.
The island, free of roads and motor vehicles, is crossed on foot along scenic trails that link the three small villages of Yumani, Cha’llapampa and Cha’lla, winding through cultivated terraces, wild Andean olive trees and sweeping views over the lake.
Along the trails you’ll find important archaeological sites such as the Sacred Rock, the Fountain of the Inca and Chincana, a complex of ruins linked to the solar rites practiced before and during Inca times.
The Aymara and Quechua communities that live on the island maintain a way of life tied to farming and fishing, offering visitors an authentic immersion in traditions that have endured for centuries on the shores of the world’s highest lake.
Isla del Sol is the ideal stop for anyone who wants to combine myth, history and altiplano landscapes on a trip to Bolivia!
