Why Colombia is perfect for a photography trip

Colombia offers very different contrasts between Tatacoa, Tayrona Park and the Sierra Nevada, San Andrés and Providencia, and cities like Bogotá and Cartagena. Good photography above all requires time: sunrises, sunsets and unplanned stops are part of the itinerary.

A good photography program reduces transfers during daylight hours and plans more nights in the key locations. Sunrises, sunsets, night skies and natural weather patterns require patience and a looser plan than a classic tourist itinerary.

Why Colombia is perfect for a photography trip
Tatacoa: light, skies and vast landscapes

Tatacoa: light, skies and vast landscapes

The Tatacoa Desert is the area to consider for open landscapes, geological detail and night skies. Light changes quickly, and the best days often start before sunrise or end after sunset.

At altitude, protect batteries and gear from cold, dust or humidity, and plan a pace compatible with acclimatization.

Practical tip: for night photography in Tatacoa, choose new-moon days and check weather conditions. The clear sky here is among the best on the planet for astrophotography.

Tayrona Park and the Sierra Nevada: nature and shifting light

In Tayrona Park and the Sierra Nevada, the photographic value comes from variability: clouds, wind, water, mountains or rainforest can change the character of the scene within minutes.

Leave room in the schedule and prefer more nights in the same area over frequent base changes.

San Andrés and Providencia, and Cartagena: culture and photography

San Andrés and Providencia, and Cartagena: culture and photography

San Andrés and Providencia add an iconic subject and a cultural dimension, while Cartagena lets you work on architecture, people, markets and street scenes.

For photographing people and communities, always ask permission and respect any restrictions at cultural or natural sites.

Building the trip

How to build a photography itinerary

Choose two or three areas, plan days with few activities, and schedule transfers during the hours least interesting for light.

15 days: basic photography itinerary

15 days — basic itinerary

Tatacoa and a photographic Tayrona Park and Sierra Nevada. Bring backups, rain or dust protection and enough batteries: in remote areas it's not always possible to quickly replace gear.

20+ days: extended photography itinerary

20+ days — extended itinerary

Like the 15-day version, with San Andrés and Providencia added for cultural photography and iconic sites, or Cartagena for street art and architecture. Ideal for a fuller and more varied photo essay.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ about a photography trip in Colombia

Tatacoa, Tayrona Park and the Sierra Nevada, San Andrés and Providencia, and the cities of Bogotá and Cartagena offer very different subjects for a photography trip in Colombia: reddish deserts, tropical rainforest, Caribbean beaches and colonial architecture. Each area calls for a different approach to light, which is why it's worth planning the itinerary starting from the subjects that interest you most.

It's best to plan more time than a classic itinerary: 12–18 days lets you wait for the right light and reduce transfers during the best hours. In the Tatacoa Desert in particular, the absence of light pollution makes it well suited to night photography too.

Use rain, dust and temperature-change protection, carry enough batteries and backups, and don't count on being able to quickly buy replacement parts in remote areas. In Tayrona Park, the high humidity calls for particular care to protect lenses and sensors from condensation and sand.
