When to Go to Bolivia: Climate, Seasons and Best Month

The best time for a first trip to Bolivia

The dry season, roughly from May to October, is often the easiest for the highlands, Uyuni and trekking. Between November and March, rainfall increases, but the Salar can offer its famous mirror effect. High altitudes call for layered clothing year-round.

Northern Bolivia can be visited year-round, with the best period in the cooler months, from April to November: from December to March the region experiences hot, dry summers, with temperatures regularly above 30°C. If you plan to visit both the north and the south on the same trip, it's best to plan around the in-between seasons (spring and autumn).

When to go to Bolivia's main areas

Each area has its own dynamics: seasonality, climate, logistics and service availability vary a lot from north to south.

Salar de Uyuni and Sud Lípez

Salar de Uyuni and Sud Lípez

Can be visited year-round, but the climate requires attention: hot days and cold nights, especially at altitude. The pace should build gradually to avoid fatigue on high-altitude excursions.

Cordillera Real

Cordillera Real

At its best between October and March. December, January and February are the most popular months for trekking, lodges and boat trips; March is often highly valued for its balance between climate and fewer crowds.

Lake Titicaca and Isla del Sol

Lake Titicaca and Isla del Sol

FAQ on When to Go to Bolivia

Not necessarily. High season often brings favorable conditions in the most sought-after areas, but requires booking further in advance and can come with higher prices, especially in the Cordillera Real and the highlands. Also consider the shoulder months, April and November, which often offer a good balance between climate and crowds.

No. Altitude, latitude, forest and mountains create very different conditions at the same time of year: choose the best month for your trip to Bolivia based on the regions included in your itinerary. It's always worth checking the specific seasonal forecasts for each stop a few weeks before departure.
