At the beginning of the 16th century, with the arrival of the Spanish, Arica became the port of embarkation of the silver extracted from Potosí (Bolivia). The city developed with the activity of saltpeter mines in the 19th century when it was part of the Peruvian territory. After the War of the Pacific, the city became part of the territory of Chile.
The climate in Arica is warm and sunny all year round. Great waves for surfing characterize its beaches. You can visit the Columbus Site Museum, where 32 mummies of the Chinchorro culture dating from 5050 B.C. are exhibited, considered among the oldest mummies in the world. The Historical and Weapons Museum, located on the Morro de Arica, illustrates the crucial battle that took place in 1880 during the War of the Pacific.
