Easter Island is shrouded in mystery and is a source of fascination for visitors and explorers equally. The island is part of Chile and can be reached with a flight from Santiago de Chile. Explore the unprecedented beauty this eco-tourism destination has to offer, trek the volcanoes, relax on the beaches and tour the stone statues in this one of a kind holiday destination.
Chile stretches over 4,300 km from north to south, crossing desert, Mediterranean valleys and Patagonian glaciers: the ideal time of year varies greatly depending on the region you want to visit.
The climate is dry and stable all year round, with big temperature swings between day and night. The months from October to March offer especially clear skies, ideal for stargazing and excursions to the geysers and Andean lagoons.
The Mediterranean climate brings warm, dry summers from December to March and mild, rainy winters from June to August. Spring and autumn are the most balanced seasons for visiting vineyards, cities and the coast.
The tourist season runs from November to March, when the days are longer and temperatures milder: the best time for trekking in Torres del Paine National Park. In the remaining months, strong wind and cold temperatures make the trails less accessible.
For a single itinerary combining Atacama, Santiago and Patagonia, the months of October-November and March-April offer the best compromise between favorable weather and lower tourist numbers.
For a first trip to Chile, we recommend at least 12-14 days, the time needed to combine Santiago, the Atacama Desert and a first taste of Patagonia without having to rush from one destination to the next. Keep in mind that internal distances are enormous: the flight between Santiago and Punta Arenas alone takes over 3 hours, while the one to Calama, the gateway to Atacama, takes about 2. With 18-20 days you can spend more time in Torres del Paine, the Lake District, and perhaps also include Easter Island, which deserves its own dedicated flight of about 5 hours from Santiago.
It largely depends on the region you want to visit, since Chile spans several different climates along its 4,300 km. The Atacama Desert can be visited year-round thanks to its dry, stable climate; the central zone, with Santiago and Valparaíso, is more pleasant in spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May), avoiding both the intense summer heat and the winter's damp cold; Chilean Patagonia, on the other hand, should be experienced exclusively between November and March, its brief summer season, since in the rest of the year the wind and temperatures make the trekking trails hard to access.
Italian citizens, like those of most European Union countries, don't need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days: a valid passport is sufficient, generally required to have at least 6 months of remaining validity from the date of entry. On arrival at the airport, a tourist form (Tarjeta de Turismo) is issued and should be kept until departure. We still recommend always checking the updated requirements before departure, since regulations can change.
Yes, Chile is particularly well suited to being combined with other Andean countries. The most common combination is with Bolivia, through the San Pedro de Atacama border, which allows you to reach the Salar de Uyuni in just a few days by jeep across the highlands; another very popular option is combining it with Argentina, especially in the Patagonian part, joining Torres del Paine to El Calafate and Ushuaia in a single itinerary. It's also possible to combine Chile with Peru, creating longer routes that bring together desert, Andean highlands and Inca archaeological sites.
