In Cartagena the atmosphere is steeped in history and colours, music and vitality. All the city squares are swarming with people and infused with the local culture, whilst the gorgeous beaches will make you dream. The symbol of this historic heritage is the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, amazing because of its formidable defence system and the communicating underground passages, regarded as one of the best defensive examples of military architecture.

The climate is hot and humid all year round, with the driest season between December and April: the ideal time to enjoy the beaches and Cartagena's historic center without the risk of heavy rain.
Thanks to its altitude, Medellín enjoys an almost constant spring-like climate, which is why it's called “the city of eternal spring.” The most frequent rains fall between April-May and October-November.
The months of December-March and July-August, corresponding to the country's two dry seasons, are generally the most suitable for combining the Andes, the Caribbean and the rainforest in a single itinerary.
For an itinerary covering Bogotá, the coffee region (Eje Cafetero) and the Caribbean coast with Cartagena, we recommend at least 10-12 days, enough time to alternate Andean altitude, green valleys and tropical climate without too frenetic a pace. With 15 days or more you can comfortably add Medellín and the San Andrés area, for those who also want to include a more remote stretch of Caribbean sea.
Colombia, being close to the equator, doesn't have true thermal seasons, but alternates drier and rainier periods. The country's two dry seasons, from December to March and from July to August, generally offer the most favorable conditions across most of the territory, from the Sierra to the Caribbean coast. In the remaining months, rains are more frequent, especially in the afternoon, but they don't stop you from traveling.
Colombia's main tourist destinations, such as Bogotá, Cartagena, Medellín and the coffee region, are today well organized, safe and regularly visited by international travelers, thanks to strong investment in tourism in recent years. As with any trip to a new destination, we always follow updated local guidance, arrange private transfers and trusted guides, and avoid areas not recommended for standard tourist itineraries.
Yes, Colombia lends itself well to being combined with Ecuador or Peru in broader itineraries across the Andean region, perhaps with a direct flight between the respective capitals. Alternatively, it can be experienced as a stand-alone destination, alternating the Andes of Bogotá and Medellín with the tropical climate of the Caribbean coast: an already rich and varied combination that doesn't necessarily require adding other countries.
