Coroico

Coroico sits 90 km from La Paz, atop a hill in the Yungas region.

Subtropical Vegetation and Organic Coffee

Coroico is characterized by subtropical vegetation, waterfalls, rushing streams and rivers where you can swim, as well as numerous coffee plantations and coca crops. The village is a quiet place, often chosen by travelers as a spot to rest or enjoy beautiful mountain walks and the lush greenery of the Yungas.

From Gold Mines to the Capital of the Yungas

Coroico’s economy was once based on gold mining: this is why the town was founded on the Korihuayco River, whose name means “golden valley” in Aymara. Coroico became the capital of the Yungas region in 1899, making it the area’s political center, and today it is well known for its production of medicinal coca, fruit and organic coffee.

The Famous Road of Death

Coroico is the ideal place to relax thanks to its exceptionally fresh air, to observe numerous species of birds and butterflies, and to sample its coffee. Two roads connect Coroico to La Paz: the newer, more relaxed route, which lets you reach La Paz by car, and the famous “Road of Death”, better suited to cyclists in search of an adrenaline rush.
